Omg there might be another California superbloom this year!
If you missed last year’s superbloom, you might have a chance to see it very soon. Depending on where you hope to see the infinite wildflowers, your best time to visit will range from late March to June.
“Superbloom” refers to wildflowers blooming at once and in many larger numbers than usual in California and Arizona. A perfect mix of environmental conditions are necessary to foster the phenomenon which used to occur every 10 years but now seems to occur much more frequently—in 2017, 2019, 2023, and very possibly 2024! First, it must be dry enough so that other plants can’t grow, then very wet but not too wet to reach dormant seeds of flowers, then warm with enough cloud cover, and finally wind must not be too strong to disrupt the flowers.
After years of following the news to determine when there would be a superbloom, I was able to see it last year. Carrizo Plain National Monument was my number one target, and I loved it so much that I spent two days there. Nothing I’ve seen compares to the hills covered in yellow, orange, and purple wildflowers.

Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve is another famous destination for flower lovers, but the fields to the East of the reserve had more poppies than the proper reserve.

This list of best places to see the superbloom is fairly comprehensive, although there are many other spots all over as well.
Keep an eye on news reports, but the prospect of another superbloom seems very likely!
